Delbert Dale, son of Joe and Hazel (Carter) Rasmussen was born July 27, 1924, on a farm near Guthrie Center, Iowa. “Ras”attended country school near his home and then graduated from Guthrie Center High School in 1942. During World War II, Delbert served with the United States Army (106th Division, 591st Field Artillery Battalion, Battery B) from 1942 - 1945 in the European Theater receiving three battle stars, including the Battle of the Bulge.

On February 14, 1947, Delbert was united in marriage with Elva Brokaw in Audubon. They lived in Harlan the first eight months of married life where he worked for Squealer Feeds and Rendering Co. In October of 1947 they moved to Elk Horn where Delbert was manager of the elevator then owned by Squealer Feeds. When the elevator was sold, Delbert and Elva bought the Elk Café in 1949, which they owned for seven years. Delbert and Elva were the proud parents of two daughters Nancy and Eileen born during this time. In 1959 Delbert bought the tavern from Otto Petersen, renaming his new business Ras’s Recreation. He owned this business for 26 years before selling it to Merle Hartvigsen.

Delbert was a member of Elk Horn Lutheran Church where he had been baptized and confirmed. He served on the church council, Elk Horn city council, volunteer fire department and the Windmill board. He had just started his 43rd year as a school bus driver for the EH-K school district. For the past ten years he has put up the American and Danish flags on Elk Horn’s Main Street. He was also a member of the Better Elk Horn Club, Optimist Club, American Legion Post 322 and AmVets Post 51.

In late September 2006, Delbert was in the hospital for routine surgery. However, his health continued to deteriorate and he died on Saturday, November 4, 2006, at Immanuel Hospital in Omaha. He was 82 years, 3 months and 8 days of age. Preceeding him in death are his parents; daughter Eileen Rasmussen who died in a motorcycle accident in July 1978; and brother George Rasmussen.

Delbert is survived by his wife Elva Rasmussen of Elk Horn; daughter Nancy and husband Donald Jenkins of Atlantic; four grandchildren: Amy and husband Adam Bisenius of Holstein; Alan Jenkins of Ames; Angela Jenkins of Cedar Falls and Emily Jenkins of Atlantic; one great-grandson Brody James Bisenius; sister Delia Benton of Guthrie Center; sister-in-law Lenore Rasmussen of Guthrie Center; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
