Ellsworth Leo “Buddy”, son of Valentine and Martha (Schmitz) Schechinger was born February 10, 1932, at Westphalia, Iowa. Buddy received his education in Westphalia and graduated from St. Boniface High School in 1950.

On June 9, 1953, Buddy was united in marriage with Grace Arkfeld at St. Peters Church in Defiance. Ten children were born to this union. The couple spent the first two years of their married life with the United States Army, stationed in Ft. Riley, Kansas, Columbia, South Carolina and Ft. Campbell, Kentucky. After his discharge Buddy started farming and they moved to Manilla on January 6, 1956. He loved farming and continued to assist his sons during busy times even after “retiring.” Buddy enjoyed family gatherings and was a very proud father and grandfather. He loved his family dearly and cherished every minute spent with them. In his spare time he enjoyed relaxing at the family’s lake home at Lake View.

Buddy was a member of the Sacred Heart Church in Manilla and the Holy Name Society. Following a short hospitalization, Buddy died unexpectedly on Easter Sunday, April 16, 2006, at Creighton Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska. He was 74 years, 2 months and 6 days old.

Preceeding Buddy in death are his parents; sisters Ella Marie Nielsen and Evelyn Coenen; brother Valentine Schechinger Jr.; grandson Cory Nissen; infant granddaughter Reagen Schechinger; brother-in-law Irmin Reding; and sister-in-law Rita Schechinger.

Buddy is survived by his wife Grace Schechinger of Manilla; ten children: Randy Schechinger and special friend Sharon Thelen of Manilla; Diane and husband Troy Andrews of Manilla; Doug Schechinger and wife Julie of Manilla; Julianne and husband Vic Wager of Vienna, Virginia; Cheri and husband Bob Adams of Breda; Cindy and husband Kurt Seuntjens of Danbury; Nancy and husband Jerry Croghan of Manning; Brian Schechinger and wife Pat of Manilla; Bruce Schechinger and wife Tracey of Manilla; and Lisa and husband Jerrod Reimer of Schleswig; 41 grandchildren: Cara, Kieth, Katie and Marc Schechinger; Colby, Cody and Grace Andrews; Taryn, Tyler, Corey and Brandon Schechinger; Steven, Stacy, Christopher and Kevin Wager; Nathan, Matthew, Andrea, Ryan, Allison, Anthony, Aimee and Evan Adams; Angela, Amy, Aaron and Andy Seuntjens; Justin, Chantel, Megan, Jerad and Amber Croghan; Denim and Jezlynn Schechinger; Bailey Schechinger; and Tanner, Conner and Keegan Reimer; great-grandson Gunner Cornelius; sisters Jeanette and husband Ray Chipman of Harlan, and Marie Reding of Manilla; brother Melvin Schechinger of Manilla; brothers-in-law Melvin Coenen of Harlan, and Robert Nielsen of Omaha; sister-in-law Dorothy Schechinger of Harlan; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
