Margery Vivian, daughter of Peder K. and Olga (Leistad) Pedersen, was born December 17, 1921, near Poplar, Iowa, in Audubon County. She graduated from Elk Horn High School. Marge was employed around the Audubon and Kimballton areas doing housekeeping and café work. She spent six months in Chicago working in a children’s home as a cook before returning to Elk Horn where she purchased a small café in 1942. “Marge’s Café” was a popular local gathering place until its closure after Marge’s marriage.

Marge was united in marriage with Dallas H. Hansen on November 18, 1945, at the Elk Horn Lutheran Church. They were the parents of four children and were the third generation to farm the Hansen family farm. In 1983 they moved to Elk Horn when they built a new home there and Margery was involved in many community activities and was employed part time at the library. The couple loved to dance and play cards together and enjoyed traveling after retirement, including a trip to Denmark and Norway and winter trips to Arizona, Texas and California. Marge was an active member of Elk Horn Lutheran Church. She loved living in Elk Horn where she could attend her grandchildren’s activities. She was an avid gardener of flowers and did quite a bit of sewing, baking and cooking. Marge also participated in the corn husking contest for several years. She took pride in preserving Danish traditions, such as dancing around the Christmas tree.

Margery entered Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn in August of 2007. On Monday, September 7, 2009, she died there at the age of 87 years and 8 months.

Margery is preceded in death by her parents; two infant sisters and one infant brother; sister Joyce Stranskov; brother Leroy Pedersen, and brother-in-law Paul Nielsen.

She is survived by her husband Dallas Hansen of Elk Horn; children: Beverly Steen and husband Dave of Elk Horn; Barbara Shelstrom and husband Marc of Lancaster, WI; Donna Muller and husband Dennis of Defiance; and Rick Hansen and wife Paulette of Kimballton; 10 grandchildren: Guthrie Steen (Allison); Lindsey Strong (Jeff); Alicia Murphy (Ryan); Marshall Shelstrom (Sarah); Tobin Muller (Casie); Jacob Muller (Megan); Tyler Muller; Thomas Hansen (Meghan); Daniel Hansen (fiancée Megan Fischer); Matthew Hansen; 8 great-grandchildren: Melea Steen; Regan & Reid Murphy; Hailey Shelstrom; Dawson & Hannah Muller; Morgan & Austin Muller; sisters Helen Nielsen of Elk Horn and Gudrun Jacobsen (Warren) of Elk Horn; brother-in-law Halvor Stranskov; sisters-in-law Clara Pedersen, Mildred Andersen, and Reta Larsen (Allan), all of Elk Horn; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
