Mount Olivet Cemetery, Manilla, IowaPatricia Hazel, daughter of N. A. and Agnes (Tofflemire) Miller was born August 26, 1924 at Earling, Iowa. She attended and graduated from St. Joseph Catholic School in Earling. Pat then attended Buena Vista College in Storm Lake and earned her teaching certificate. She taught country school for a number of years.
On June 17, 1947, Pat was united in marriage with Junior Edwin Carstens at St. Joseph Church in Earling. They lived in Manilla for a short time before moving to a farm north of Manilla for the remainder of their lives. Pat and Junior never had children of their own, but were devoted to numerous nieces and nephews who spent many summers with them on their farm. Pat was primarily a homemaker, also helping her husband with the farming operation.
Pat was a member of Sacred Heart Parish in Manilla. She was also a member of the Altar and Rosary Society, Catholic Daughters of the Americas, St. Katherine Court #266. Pat enjoyed the Helping Hand Club and Manilla Community Club. Pat and Junior loved to travel and dance when they were able. She especially enjoyed playing cards and visiting with her friends.
After the death of her husband in the fall of 2004, Pat continued to live on their farm. She was diagnosed with cancer in April of 2009 and lived with her niece Sandy and husband Marv Sauser while undergoing chemotherapy in Des Moines. She died unexpectedly on Friday, August 21, 2009, at the age of 84 years, 11 months and 26 days at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
Preceeding her in death are her parents; husband; two brothers Leo Miller and wife Caroline and Leonard Miller; and sister Eileen and husband William Jacoby.
She is survived by her sister Mary Mertens of Spokane, WA; sister-in-law Lucille Carstens of Manilla and many loving nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
