Alvin Albert Max, son of Carl and Minnie (Steckelberg) Bandow, was born March 24, 1925 at home on the farm north of Manilla in Crawford County, Iowa. Alvin attended country school through the fifth grade when the family moved to a farm near Irwin. He completed his schooling in Irwin, graduating with the Class of 1943. He enlisted in the United States Navy that year and served as an air log and navigation yeoman on an aircraft carrier in the South Pacific. He worked in an office aboard ship, often filing confidential communications. He received his honorable discharge in 1946.

Alvin returned to Manilla where he was united in marriage with Sylvia Mae McClatchey on June 18, 1946. Four children were born to this union. They lived and farmed west of Manilla, then moved to town in 1951. He worked for the Milwaukee Railroad for five years and then started at Farmland in Denison. After five years, in 1963, he transferred to Iowa Falls as foreman and eventually advanced to supervisor over five departments. Alvin retired in 1982 and moved back to Manilla the next year.

He and Sylvia enjoyed camping in their AirStream RV and were members of the Royal Rovers of Manilla. He was also a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla where he served as an elder. While living in Iowa Falls he served as the commander of the American Legion Post 188. He was a member of the American Legion Post 132 in Manilla and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3517 of Manning. Over the years, he especially enjoyed visiting his grandchildren.

After Sylvia’s death on May 24, 2008, Alvin continued to live in Manilla. When Alvin’s health began to fail he became a resident of the Manilla Manor Nursing Home where he died on Friday, October 9, 2009, at the age of 84 years, 6 months and 15 days.

Preceeding Alvin in death are his wife, Sylvia Bandow; sons Ronald Bandow and Russell Bandow; daughter Roberta Bandow in infancy; granddaughters Jennifer and Kelly Bandow; brother–in-law Vincent Determan and other in-laws Earl McClatchey, Carl McClatchey, Gail McClatchey and Ann Meyer.

He is survived by his son Randy Bandow and wife Diane of Cummings, GA; daughter-in-law Linda Bandow of Iowa Falls; six grandchildren: Kristi and husband Blair Sailor of Woodstock, GA; Michelle and husband Tim Gorder of Iowa Falls; Brett Bandow and wife Erin of Alden; Shawn Bandow of Iowa Falls; Allison Bandow and husband Tom Nixon of Iowa City, IA; Ben Bandow and wife Ashley of Blair, NE; 11 great-grandchildren; sister Ruby Determan of Early; in-laws: Karen and husband George Jahn; Shirley and husband Dick Hanson and Linda and husband Ron Olson; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
