Education: graduated from Irwin (IA) Community High School, Class of 1936

Religious affiliation: baptized at the Church of Christ in Irwin, IA; as an adult, he was a member of the United Methodist Church, Irwin, IA

Military service: enlisted in the U.S. Army on Nov. 4, 1941 at Fort Crook, NE. He fought at the Battle of the Bulge where he received numerous awards, including the Purple Heart Award. On Oct. 24, 1945, Virgil was honorably discharged at Fort Sheridan, IL.

Marriage: Bernadine Pedersen; March 31, 1946; at the Methodist Church in Harlan, IA

Employment: Virgil was a proud farmer. During the school year, Virgil would drive the school bus for the Irwin, (IA) Kirkman School District.

Hobbies/Interests: Virgil enjoyed watching his favorite sports teams. He was also an active member of the local American Legion.
