Military service: Enlisted in the U.S. Navy; served during the Vietnam War before being honorably discharged

Employment: worked at Western Engineering Company in Harlan, IA from 1965 to 1988. At that time, he went to work for the Shelby County (IA) Secondary Roads Department until 2006
