Survived by: wife, Mary Whitaker of Carroll, IA; son, Chris Whitaker, also of Carroll, IA; sisters, Sharon (spouse, Lester) Frazier of Georgetown, TX and Susan (spouse, Barney) Smith of Yuma, AZ; Mary’s children: Janet Renze (spouse, Kevin) of Mitchellville, MD, and their children, Henry and Charlie; John Nieland (spouse, Anne) of Urbandale, IA, and their children, Tom and Zach; Denise Boring (spouse, Chris) of Urbandale, IA; Jim Nieland (spouse, Liz) of North Wilkesboro, NC, and their children, Ally, Tony and Andrew; other family members and many friends

Religious affiliation: member, Congregational United Church of Christ in Harlan, IA, where he served as chairman of the trustees.

Military service: Enlisted in the U.S. Navy; served during the Vietnam War before being honorably discharged

Marriages: (1) Ellen “Ellie” Ann Rold; December 5, 1971; in Cuppy’s Grove, IA (2) Mary Nieland; August 1, 2008; in Wall Lake, IA

Employment: worked at Western Engineering Company in Harlan, IA from 1965 to 1988. At that time, he went to work for the Shelby County (IA) Secondary Roads Department until 2006

Hobbies/Interests: enjoyed woodworking, reading, and traveling
