Funeral services: Thursday, July 2, 2009, at First Baptist Church in Harlan, IA; Pastor Walter Bernard and Pastor Roger Manning officiated. Burial, with Military Rites conducted by the Shelby County VFW Post No. 941 and the Harlan American Legion Helmer Reyelt Post No. 150, was at the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, IA

Survived by: Children, Lyle Walker, Jr. (spouse, Marcia) of Harlan, IA, Donna (spouse, Jim) Burdick of Chevy Chase, MD, Dolores (spouse, Gary) Brandt of Council Bluffs, IA, LaVonne Force of Harlan, IA, Linda (spouse, Dennis) Hielen of Shenandoah, IA, Mary (spouse, Rodney) McCumber of Newton, IA; 21 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; sisters, Irma Williams of Logan, IA and Velma Vining of Bay City, OR; nieces; nephews; other family members and friends

Predeceased by: Parents, John O. and Patience (nee Pitt) Walker; wife of 61 years, Myrtle (deceased Feb. 9, 2004, Harlan, IA), siblings, Chester, Marie, Leonard, Lester, Vester, Albert, Minnie, and Ruby; son-in-law, David Force

Education: attended Douglas Hill Country School east of Woodbine, IA and 1 year at Woodbine High School before leaving school to assist his parents on the family farm

Religious affiliation: baptized at Bethel Baptist Church in Harlan, IA.

Military service: In 1942, Lyle enlisted in the U.S. Army. He attended basic training in Texas and was stationed at Ft. Knox, Kentucky, Chanute, Kansas and Salt Lake City, Utah, where he received specialized training as a military police officer and prison guard. In 1943, Lyle spent time in France, Belgium, Luxemburg, Germany, Austria, and Czechoslovakia. On October 27, 1945, Lyle returned to the United States and was honorably discharged.

Marriage: Myrtle Marie Peterson; February 24, 1942; Papillion, NE

Employment: Lyle worked on a farm east of Harlan, IA, and later farmed various farms in Harrison and Shelby Counties. In 1949, Lyle and Myrtle moved to Shelby County, IA where they continued to farm until 1963, when they moved into Harlan.

Hobbies/Interests: devoted Christian; He enjoyed fishing and hunting, watching and playing baseball, bowling, looking for antiques, and selling goods at flea markets. Lyle also loved playing and listening to music. While at Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, IA, he enjoyed participating in various activities.
