Education: attended school at Abraham Lincoln High School in Council Bluffs, IA after their family moved there from Minnesota.

Military service: He entered the U.S. Army on March 18, 1942, at Ft. Des Moines, IA. While in the army, he served his country in the Signal Corp repairing equipment during World War II in Naples, Rome, Greece and Africa. He was honorably discharged from Ft. Leavenworth, KS on Oct. 12, 1945.

Employment: After finishing high school, he moved to the Minden, IA area and farmed with his parents, as well as having worked as a hired hand for neighboring farmers. After getting married, Richard and Emma rented a farm outside of Harlan, IA until 1956, when they moved to a farm near Neola. Emma passed away in 1963.

Richard and Doris Felton were married in 1966, and they made their home in Neola where he worked as a general contractor, specializing in plumbing and carpentry. He continued working out of his home until his retirement in 1994.
