Funeral services: Mass of Christian Burial: Saturday, July 23, 2011, St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Defiance, IA; burial,with Military Rites conducted by American Legion Post No. 707, was at Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Defiance.

Survived by: Wife of 63 years, Genevieve Scheuring of Defiance, IA; children, Jim Scheuring (spouse, Cindy) of Defiance, IA, Alice (spouse, Jim) Huber of Omaha, NE, Chuck Scheuring (spouse, Darla) of Council Bluffs, IA, Kathy (spouse, Mike) King of Freeland, MI, Jane Scheuring of Fremont, NE, and Dale Scheuring (spouse, Lisa) of Defiance, IA; 19 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; other family members and friends

Predeceased by: Parents, Joseph and Suzanna (nee Mumm) Scheuring; sibings, Cecelia, Valentine, Carmen, Marcella, and Austin

Education: attended Union Township School for 2 years before going to St. Paul’s Catholic School in Defiance, IA; graduated with the Class of 1939.

Religious affiliation: baptized at St. Columbia Catholic Church and confirmed at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Defiance, IA, where he remained a member for the rest of his life. He held many positions there, including eucharistic minister, and member of the parish council, finance council, and church choir.

Military service: Vernon enlisted in the U.S. Army in October of 1941, and served in the 250th Coast Artillery of the Alaska Defense Command in the Alaskan Aleutian Islands. He also served in the 789 Coast Artillery, stationed in the Phillipines. He was honorably discharged on Nov. 29, 1945.

Marriage: Genevieve Gaul; Feb. 10, 1948; St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling, Iowa

Employment: Farmed for over 50 years and raised cattle and hogs. Retired in 1985.

Hobbies/Interests: He served on the school board and was a 4-H leader for 20 years. Vernon enjoyed farming with his Minneapolis Moline tractors and farm machinery, and driving Oldsmobile cars all of his life.
