Education: Gary attended country school Pleasant Ridge #6, Council Bluffs, IA. Five weeks into his third grade year, Gary contracted polio in the 1950 polio outbreak and spent months at Mercy Hospital. When he returned home, the family moved to a farm south of Walnut, IA and, in 1951, he continued his education at the Walnut Community School, graduating with the Class of 1961. Gary then attended Commercial Extension School of Business in Omaha, NE.
