Education: attended grade school in Panama, IA, until Grade 8; he then took a test to receive his high school equivalent diploma in Harlan, IA. In 1937, he attended Barber school in Sioux City, IA, where he received his license to barber.
Religious affiliation: baptized at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia, IA. He received his first communion and was confirmed at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Panama, IA.
