Harold D. Lansman - Age 80

Harold Duane Lansman was born on May 8, 1931 to Emanuel and Stella (Jacobsen) Lansman in Polk Township, Shelby County, Iowa. He attended Monroe #5 country school and graduated from Harlan High School in May of 1949 and then farmed with his father in Monroe Township.

On November 27, 1953, he was united in marriage to Donna Gibson at the United Methodist Church in Harlan. Three children were born to this union: Debra, Diane, and Howard. They farmed until 1965 and then joined Nelson Farm Supply; this was his life’s work until his retirement.

Harold was a charter member of Calvary Baptist Church in Walnut, Iowa. He served his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in many capacities as deacon, Sunday School teacher, youth leader, choir member, and Sunday School superintendent.

Harold was a supporter of agriculture. He was a 4-H member and was instrumental in organizing the Monroe Standbys 4-H Club. For his leadership, he was awarded a trip to the National 4-H Club Congress in Chicago in 1952. He served as Shelby County Farm Bureau President in 1962. He received the Distinguished Service to Agriculture award from the Shelby County Farm Bureau in 1996. He was inducted into the Shelby County Fair Hall of Fame in 2002 and the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame in 2008. Harold organized the Chatburn Avenue merchants to support the 4-H/FFA livestock sale at the county fair.

He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, and boating. He was an avid supporter of all of his grandchildren’s activities.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Robert Lansman and sister-in-law Norma.

Harold is survived by his wife of fifty-eight years, Donna Lansman of Harlan, Iowa; children Debra and her husband Paul Ladd of Boone, Iowa, Diane and her husband Jonathan Darling of Ankeny, Iowa, and son Howard Lansman and his wife Tara of Harlan; nine grandchildren: Joshua and Allyson Ladd, Evan, Karen, and Drew Darling, and Luke, Seth, Trey, and Will Lansman; other family members and friends.

Pastor Paul Hutchins officiated the 10:30 AM funeral service on Saturday, January 7, 2012 at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa. Honorary casket bearers were Donald Andersen, Marlow Clemons, Robert Dierking, Eugene Clayton, Ed Mills, Ralph Hansen, James Juhl, Dewey Linden, Horace Graves, Joel Berndt, and Gene Arentson. Serving as casket bearers were Joshua Ladd, Allyson Ladd, Evan Darling, Karen Darling, Drew Darling, Luke Lansman, Seth Lansman, Trey Lansman, and Will Lansman. Interment was held at the Harlan Cemetery.
