Ronald L. Jacobsen - Age 73

Ronald Lee "Jake" Jacobsen was born on December 18, 1938 to Einar and Alvina (Hansen) Jacobsen in Jacksonville, Iowa. He grew up on a farm near Jacksonville and was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church. He attended Harlan High School and graduated with the Class of 1956.

On December 20, 1975, Ron was united in marriage to Faye Backhaus Kardell at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan. They made their home in Harlan.

Ronald was always supportive of his children’s activities from Boy Scouts, 4-H, dancing, football, and cheerleading. Ron and Faye traveled to many of Kevin’s football games at Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Missouri, and to visit Lisa in Washington, DC. Ronald’s hobbies were "helping others", yard work, playing cards, and attending sporting events for his grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

In May of 2002, Ron retired from the railroad after twenty-four years with the Chicago Northwestern Railroad and six years with Union Pacific Railroad. He loved working for the railroad in Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, and Missouri. After his retirement, he and Faye began spending their winters in Harlingen, Texas.

Ronald and Faye were members of the Harlan Chamber of Commerce in connection with their businesses: Mode O’Day and Yours and Mine Consignment Shop. Ronald was always the driver of the Mode O’Day floats with all his pretty girls. He sat in the fields many hours waiting to get in line for the parades. He loved it...girls and hot weather.

For many years Ronald served as a board member of the Corley Community Club in Corley, Iowa. He was a former board member of the Sun Valley Acres RV Park in Harlingen, Texas. Ronald and friends of Sun Valley Acres were instrumental in raising funds to replace the roof of the community building after Hurricane Dolly in 2008. He was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in LaFeria, Texas where he was a deacon.

Ronald died on February 20, 2012 at the Harlingen Medical Center in Harlingen, Texas, having attained the age of seventy-three years, two months, and two days. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Gary Jacobsen.

He is survived by his wife Faye Jacobsen of Harlan, Iowa; children: Lisa Kardell of Alexandria, Virginia, Kevin Kardell and his wife Jill of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, and Teri and her husband James Buwalda of Harlan; two grandchildren: Trevor and Reece Kardell of Lee’s Summit; aunt Erna Lange of Elk Horn, Iowa; sisters-in-law Janet and her husband Don Dotzler, Rachel Dolby, and Sandra and her husband Kent Gruhn; aunt Hazel Schneider of Walnut, Iowa; nieces and nephews; other family members and friends in Iowa and Texas.

Pastor Steven Chellew officiated the 11:00 AM funeral service on Saturday, March 24, 2012 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan, Iowa. Honorary casket bearers were Dave and Joyce Kardell, Ron and Linda Pethoud, Keith and Betty Greder, Fritz and Janice Tiarks, and Jerome and Shirley Mumm. Serving as casket bearers were Jeffrey Gruhn, Julie Monson, Jacie Hulse, Jim Dotzler, Diane Harris, and Debi Bozik. Interment was held at the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa.
