Catherine E. Gubbels - Age 90

Catherine Elizabeth Gubbels was born on January 15, 1922 to Fred and Anna (Hoehn) Stinn in Earling, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling. She graduated from St. Joseph’s Catholic School.

Catherine attended the Electronic Radio and TV Institute in Omaha, Nebraska and became proficient with Teletype 2 Morse Code and worked in Louisiana for one year.

On June 8, 1943, she was united in marriage to Peter Gubbels at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling, Iowa. Five children were born to this union: Rev. Wayne, Cletus, Karen, Janice, and Gwendolyn. After her marriage, she helped her husband on their farm southwest of Westphalia and raised the children. They remained on the farm after their retirement in 1978. In 1983, they moved to Harlan, Iowa and became members of St. Michael’s Catholic Church.

She was an active member of St. Boniface Catholic Church and participated in many church events. She was involved in the Catholic Daughters of America, DCCW’s, and the 4-H Extension. She was also an active member of the Hospital Auxiliary, Shelby County Historical Society, and St. Michael’s Guild. She was a seamstress for many years and devoted a lot of time and energy to sewing and mending for people.

Catherine died on Friday, November 23, 2012 at the age of ninety years, ten months, and eight days. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Peter, brothers Leonard Stinn and Cletus Stinn, sister Luella Rasmussen; and sons-in-law Michael W. Gross and Robert W. Robinson.

She is survived by her children: Rev. Wayne Gubbels of Adel, Iowa, Cletus Gubbels and his wife Mary Jane of Harlan, Iowa, Karen Gross of Harlan, Janice and her husband Ken Klein of Harlan, and Gwendolyn and her husband Marc Clemon of Soldier, Iowa; eleven grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; sisters Helen Langenfeld of Earling, Iowa, Bernadine Stotenberg of Omaha, Nebraska, Regina Koesters of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and brother Frank Stinn and his wife Mary Ann of Tinley Park, Illinois; other family members and friends.

Rev. Wayne Gubbels presided over the 11:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, November 30, 2012 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were Chad Klein, Kyle Klein, Brian Gross, Quentin Walker, Joe Tunender, and Jerry Graber. Interment was held at St. Boniface Cemetery in Westphalia.
