Robert M. Grove - Age 65

Robert "Bob" Mark Grove was born on July 9, 1947 to Charles and Ruth (Herzog) Grove in Kenosha, Wisconsin. His legacy of selflessness and helping others began at age 8, when he went to work full-time to help his family make ends meet. He graduated from Pewaukee High School, in Wisconsin, with the Class of 1965.

Bob joined the United States Marine Corps at age 18, which he grew to love. He served his country for 6 years, including with courage and distinction in Vietnam, before his honorable discharge on September 1, 1970. He was united in marriage to April Pelletier on January 20, 1968. Two children were born to this union: Luana and Mike.

Bob began working for the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad in 1970 as a clerk. He also worked for the Union Pacific Railroad, working his way up to the Senior Director of Transportation of the Coal Department, until his retirement in March of 2004. During those years, he worked hard and never missed a single day of work. "I don’t have time to be sick" was his mantra.

He was very active in his children’s lives; he coached soccer, was a Cub Master, and served as a school board member. The importance of family was why when he retired, he and April moved to Florida, but eventually ended up in Shelby, Iowa to be closer to the grandchildren. He enjoyed getting to know others and spending as much time with family as he could. He was straight-forward, truthful, and often went out of his way to help others. This was not exclusive to his family; he helped strangers, neighbors, friends, and friends of his children without hesitation.

Bob passed away at his home in Shelby on Tuesday, January 29, 2013 having attained the age of 65 years, 6 months, and 20 days. He was preceded in death by his mother Ruth. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, April Grove of Shelby; daughter, Luana Harman of Shelby; son, Mike Grove of Council Bluffs, Iowa; five grandchildren: Samantha Harman, Paige Harman, Luke Harman, Avril Harman, and Keira Grove; his father, Charles Grove of Seattle, Washington; two brothers, John and Tom; other relatives and friends.

Pastor Eric Meissner officiated the 2:00 pm Celebration of Life Service on Saturday, February 2, 2013 at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Avoca, Iowa. Inurnment will be held at a later date.
