Leonard P. Greiner

Leonard Peter Greiner was born on March 26, 1918, one of six children to John and Mary (Stiver) Greiner on the family farm near Panama, Iowa. He attended St. Mary’s Catholic Schools for elementary and high school in Panama, graduating with the Class of 1936, the same year he was a member of the state championship basketball team.

After graduation, Leonard farmed with his father on the family farm where he was born and raised. In 1946, Leonard entered the United States Army and served in occupied Japan. One year later, he was honorably discharged and returned home, moving to Harlan and working at Greiner’s Bar and Café for several years with his brother Larry.

On November 14, 1949, Leonard was united in marriage to Marie Elizabeth Gunsolley in Red Oak, Iowa. Five children were born to this union: Ken, David, Beccy, Mary, and Jennifer.

In 1959, he began employment at Nishna Botna Valley REC as a materials clerk. Leonard and Marie cleaned at the Harlan National Bank for twenty years together. In April of 1983, Leonard retired after twenty-four years of service to Nishna Botna Valley REC.

The couple lived in Harlan throughout their entire married life. Leonard was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church for many years. He loved puttering in his garage and working in his yard and had one of the most beautiful lawns in the neighborhood to show for it. But what he loved the most was his family and spending time with his grandchildren.

Leonard became a resident of Elm Crest Retirement Community in July of 2004 and it was there that he died on Thursday, February 7, 2008, having attained the age of eighty-nine years, ten months, and twelve days. He was preceded in death by one son David Greiner, his parents, an infant brother, Donald, his brothers Lawrence, Gerald, and Bob, and his sister Margaret Schiltz.

Leonard is survived by his wife of fifty-eight years, Marie Greiner of Harlan; his children: Ken Greiner of Harlan, Beccy Holle of Harlan, Mary and her husband Phil Schneider of Lenexa, Kansas, and Jennifer and her husband Scott Ashe of Overland Park, Kansas; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; other family members and friends.

Graveside services were held at 3:00 PM on Saturday, February 9, 2008, at the Harlan Cemetery with Pastor Al Hazelton officiating.
