Carmen Leahy was a tireless volunteer

Carmen Leahy worked behind the scenes to give Creighton Prep football players a clean image while her husband, Don, coached the team.

“She laundered and mended those uniforms for those 17 years,” he said. “We always had the best-dressed team.”

Carmen Leahy, who had Alzheimer's disease, died Tuesday at Parsons House, he said. She was 82.

Prep recognized and honored the couple two years ago when the Carmen and Don Leahy Stadium was dedicated.

“She is absolutely unbelievable in the volunteer work that she did,” her husband said. He gave a rundown of some of her other contributions:

• At St. Pius X School for 12 years, she recruited, organized and supervised the volunteer-run cafeteria that fed 800-plus students each school day.

• At St. Leo Catholic Church in its first 10 years, she recruited, organized and supervised the church cleaning crew. She also helped with premarital counseling, organized the parish food drive for the Siena-Francis House and headed a group that served meals after funerals.

• At the University of Nebraska at Omaha, she was a team captain for many years for the UNO Women's Walk, now called the Claussen-Leahy (named for Don) Run & Walk.

Besides coaching at Creighton Prep, the now-retired Don Leahy was athletic director at both UNO and Creighton University.

Carmen Leahy was born in Portsmouth, Iowa. Her family moved to Omaha when she was in first grade. She graduated from Omaha Central High School in 1948 and immediately began working for Mutual of Omaha.

Besides her husband of 60 years, other survivors include sons Army Lt. Col. John Leahy of Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md., and Richard Leahy of Yutan, Neb.; daughter Mary Bayne of Omaha, an assistant principal at Millard North High School; and seven grandchildren.

A funeral Mass will begin at 10:30 a.m. Today at St. Leo Catholic Church, 1920 N. 102nd St.
