OBITUARIES

RICHARD EUGENE DORAN, 85, of Harlan , died Thu., April 11th, at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan. A Mass of Christian Burial service for RICHARD DORAN will be held 11-a.m. Mon., April 15th, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, in Harlan. Pauley-Jones Funeral Home in Harlan has the arrangements.

Visitation at the funeral home is from 2-until 9-PM Sunday, with a Wake service at 6-p.m.

Burial will be in the St. Boniface Cemetery at Westphalia.

RICHARD DORAN is survived by:
His wife – Rita Doran, of Harlan.
His sons – Richard (Carol) Doran, Ralph (Shirley) Doran, and Randy (Ann) Doran, all of Harlan, and Ronald (Linda) Doran, of Dallas, TX.
His daughters – Colleen Ashmere, of Dallas, TX.; Carolyn (Roy) Haynes, of Midland, TX, & Shirley Doran, of Kansas City, Mo.
His brothers – William Doran, of Creston, and Russell Doran, of Ava, MO.
His sister – Marcelline (James) Hudson, of Ava, Mo.
13 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren.

Richard Eugene Doran, Sr. - Age 85

Richard Eugene Doran, the son of William and Maud (Kay) Doran was born January 14, 1928 in Crossroads, Missouri. He attended school in Ava, Missouri and shortly after his 15th birthday, Richard entered the United States Navy on the 13th day of February 1943. He attained the rank of Seaman 2nd Class while serving in the South Pacific. His military service included San Diego, California, The USS Chicago, the Pacific Fleet and Seattle, Washington. Richard was honorably discharged on December 9, 1947.

After his military service, Richard returned to Missouri for a short time before moving to Shelby County, Iowa. On June 5, 1950, he was united in marriage to Rita Mary Goetz at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia, Iowa. Seven children were born to this union, Richard Jr., Colleen, Ralph, Carolyn, Ronald, Randy and Shirley. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Boniface Catholic Church and then became a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan. Richard farmed, milked cows and also drove tank truck collecting milk from dairy farms. He later drove an LP semi-truck for Farm Service Co-op. His family was raised in Corley and then on a farm south and west of the Harlan Airport where he built his dream home.

Richard was known as a quiet man, a hard worker and taught his children how to work. His free time was spent with his family, fishing at the lake, RVing and attending sporting events.

He died with his family around him at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa on April 11, 2013 having attained the age of eighty-five years, two months and twenty-eight days. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters Mary Ellen and Maxine and one brother Raymond.

He is survived by his wife of almost 63 years, Rita Doran of Harlan, Iowa; children: Richard and his wife Carol Doran of Harlan, Colleen Ashmore of Dallas, Texas; Ralph and his wife Shirley Doran of Harlan; Carolyn and her husband Roy Haynes of Midland, Texas; Ronald and his wife Linda Doran of Dallas; Randy and his wife Ann of Harlan and Shirley Ann Doran of Kansas City, Missouri; 13 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren; his brothers: William Doran of Creston, Iowa and Russell Doran of Ava, Missouri; his sister Marcelline and her husband James Hudson of Ava, Missouri; nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated by Rev. John Frost at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, April 15, 2013 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa. Military rites were conducted at St. Boniface Cemetery in Westphalia, Iowa by the Westphalia and Defiance American Legion Post No.227. Serving as casket bearers were Dax Doran, Randy Doran, Jr., Josh Doran, Shawn Doran, Marcus Doran, and Ryan Doran.
