Erma Nihsen, 84
Sept. 6, 1928 - April 6, 2013

SHELBY –– Erma Martha Nihsen was born on September 6, 1928 in Pipestone, MN to Edward and Clara (Hiller) Horstmeyer. She was one of five children in the family and she graduated from McClelland High School.

Erma met Harold J. Nihsen at a dance and on September 20, 1950 the couple married at her parent’s farm in McClelland. Five children were born to this union: Robert, Don, Barb, Bev, and LaRae. Harold bought a farm near Shelby in 1957 and the family resided here until his retirement in 1994. During the time on the farm, Erma was proud to be a farmer’s wife. She always had coffee on for guests and was an excellent pie maker and baker. She enjoyed her grandkids and great-grandkids and she and Harold attended many of their activities. After Harold retired, the couple moved into town and were there for 15 years. Harold died on October 1, 2011 and shortly after, Erma moved to Elk Ridge Village in Elkhorn, NE. She quickly became at home and was at every social event. She was very loved at the home and was a mother and grandmother to many. She had always been a people person and she would open her doors to staff on snow days and allow them to stay with her. She was a loving, compassionate, sweet lady that always had a smile on her face. Holding hands and talking with others gave her much joy.

Erma died on Saturday, April 6, 2013 at Methodist Hospital in Omaha, NE having attained the age of 84 years and 7 months. Along with her parents, Erma was preceded in death by her husband Harold, daughter LaRae, sister Elsa, and brother Bernard.

She is survived by her children: Robert Nihsen and his wife Dixie of Shelby, Don Nihsen and his wife Rhonda Day of Gretna, NE, Barb Schwarz of Omaha, NE, and Bev Nihsen of Omaha; seventeen grandchildren; twenty-two great-grandchildren; brother Elmer Horstmeyer of Loveland, CO; sister Ella Stamp of Harlan; other relatives and friends.

Pastor Brian Wohlhuter officiated the 10:00 a.m. funeral service on Wednesday, April 10, 2013 at the Minden United Church of Christ in Minden. Serving as casket bearers were Don Hansen, George Wear, Danny Hall, Jim Schaben, Jr., Don Herbst, and Wayne Bladt. Interment was held at the Minden Cemetery.
