James “Jim” O. Schueman - Age 88

James Otto Schueman was born on February 7, 1925 to Rudolph “Rudy” and Grace (Garrison) Schueman in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He was the third of ten children in the family. At a young age, Jim began driving truck after Rudy suffered from a leg injury. In 1943, when Jim was age 18, he enlisted into the United States Coast Guard and served as a Merchant Marine during WWII. He served his country until his honorable discharge on March 27, 1944.

After returning to the Avoca area, Jim met Phyllis Myers. The couple married on June 28, 1945 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Three children were born to this union: James, Linda, and Jeffery. Jim took over his father’s trucking business and in 1948 he started Schueman Brothers Trucking. After years of hauling livestock and grain, he began to haul refrigerated goods. He drove truck for fifty years.

Jim enjoyed golfing and traveling. He attended Merchant Marine meetings and conventions in different parts of the US and traveled to Washington D.C. to see the WWII Monument. He enjoyed trips to Omaha to see friends, driving to see his sisters, and attending his grandchildren’s sporting events. He wintered to Tucson, Arizona to visit his sister Margaret, and traveled to Mexico with a good friend to explore the small villages and countryside.

He served on the town council for three terms, the Park Board for six years and the school board before they reorganized to AvoHa. He was an American Legion member and a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Jim moved to the Avoca Lodge in 2012 for a short time before moving to Avoca Nursing and Rehab. This is where he died on Wednesday, April 10, 2013 having attained the age of 88 years, 2 months, and 3 days. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis, a son Jeffery, brothers: Frank, Walter, John, and Denny, and a sister Bernice.

He is survived by a son James Schueman and his wife Janeé of Avoca, Iowa, daughter Linda Cruz and her husband Juan of Greeley, Colorado; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brother George Schueman of Oakland, Iowa; sisters Margaret Maassen of Avoca, Iowa, Peg Cvejdlik of Carter Lake, Iowa, and Kay Havick of Harlan, Iowa; other relatives and friends.
