She attended country school at Douglas Township No. 9, Kirkman School through the tenth grade, and Harlan High School graduating with the Class of 1946. After graduation, she worked as a secretary at the Harlan Chamber of Commerce earning $5.50 per week. She worked at the Shelby County Welfare office until 1949.

On July 21, 1948, she was united in marriage to Olin “Olie” Pash at her parent’s farm home near Harlan. They became parents to five children: Janis, Jolene, Randy, Redge, and Ron. Crystal was a full-time housewife on the farm.
