Aletha M. Brue - Age 86

Aletha Mae Brue was born on May 12, 1926 to Louis and Irene (Quathamer) Ahrenholtz in Manilla, Iowa. She was baptized at the Evangelical Church in Defiance and attended Defiance Public Schools, graduating with the Class of 1944. She went to AIB in Des Moines for two years.

On June 29, 1949 she was united in marriage to Harold Brue. Five children were born to them: Vernon, Joleen, Becky, Karen, and Benji. After their marriage, they lived in an apartment in the upstairs of his parent’s home before moving to their own farm south of Defiance.

In 1971, they made their home in Irwin, Iowa where Aletha continued her baking business, Le’s Creative Cakery, specializing in weddings, anniversaries and other special events. She loved music, quilting, and spending time with her family. After Harold’s death in 1990, she remained living in Irwin until 2000 when she moved to an apartment in Harlan.

In March of 2011, she became a resident of Elm Crest Retirement Home where she died on Sunday, May 27, 2012, having attained the age of eighty-six years and fifteen days. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her brother Harry Ahrenholtz.

Aletha is survived by her children: Vernon Brue and his wife Linda of Harlan, Iowa, Joleen and her husband Gary Koch of New Ulm, Minnesota, Becky and her husband Mark Reinig of Skidmore, Missouri, Karen and her husband Dale Wood of Greenfield, Iowa, and Benji Brue and his wife Patty of Jackson, Michigan; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brothers and sister: Harold Ahrenholtz and his wife Frances, Betty Lou and her husband Alvin Armentrout, Howard Ahrenholtz and his wife Lois, William Ahrenholtz and his wife Louise, and Richard Ahrenholtz; brother-in-law Bill Brue and his wife Peggy; other family members and friends.

Pastor Steven Chellew officiated the 1:00 PM funeral service on Tuesday, June 5, 2012 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan, Iowa. Helen Warren provided the music. Serving as casket bearers were Bob Brue, Austin Brue, Nathan Brue, Parker Brue, Tom Gaer, Roger Ahrenholtz, Steven (Barney) Ahrenholtz, Randy Ahrenholtz, Bruce Ahrenholtz, and Joel Ahrenholtz. Interment was held at Union Township Cemetery in Defiance, Iowa.
