Stephen L. Anderson - Age 62

Stephen Lee Anderson was born on June 11, 1950 to Chester and Darlene (Meisland) Anderson in Harlan, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan. He attended school in Harlan and received his GED while he was in the military.

He was united in marriage to Kathleen Ellen Schomer on September 14, 1968, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan. Two daughters were born to them: Michelle and Melissa.

On August 28, 1968, Stephen enlisted in the United States Army. He served during Vietnam as a driver in Germany. He received his honorable discharge on August 4, 1971, and returned to Harlan where he operated the Westside and the Denison Car Cleaning Center in Denison, Iowa. He also helped his dad at Harlan Welding. Stephen and his brother, Dean, owned and operated Midwest Welding before he become a private contractor.

Stephen loved spending time at the cabin in Lake View with his family and friends. His favorite activities included boating, skiing, and sitting around the campfire telling funny stories.

Stephen retired in June of 2012 due to his illness. He died on Monday, January 21, 2013, at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the age of sixty-two years, seven months, and ten days. He was preceded in death by his father and his sister Lois Anderson.

He is survived by his wife of forty-four years Kathleen Anderson of Harlan, Iowa; daughters Michelle and her husband Eric Brooks of Harlan and Melissa Jacobsen and her friend Jim Stanley of Avoca, Iowa; five grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; mother Darlene Anderson of Harlan; sister Deanna and her husband Gary Krummel of Avoca, brother Dean Anderson of Harlan; other family members and many friends.

Pastor Al Hazelton officiated the 5:00 PM funeral service on Friday, January 25, 2013 at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa. Music was provided by Joe Reed. Honorary casket bearers were Katy Ponsar, Alissa Andersen, Matthew Andersen, Jordan Jacobsen, Jessica Jacobsen, Matt Andress, Mike Miller, and Mike Wohlhutter.
