Ann Marie Hammitt, age 95, of Logan, Iowa passed away Thursday, February 14, 2013 at the Longview Care Center in Missouri Valley, Iowa. Marie was born May 26, 1917 in Cass Township, Harrison County, to William and Elsie (McKeighan) Oloff. Her birth was followed by two sisters Elsie and Edith and brothers Lyle, William and Gary. Marie, as she was known, attended Cass Center country school and graduated from Logan High School with certification in Normal Training. She taught at country schools in Cass Township while living at home and helping her family through the Great Depression of the 1930’s.

On March 22, 1939 she married Lyle Hammitt of Logan. On June 12, 1941 they were blessed with the birth of their daughter Connie Lea. Lyle and Marie farmed various rented farms in the Persia, Woodbine and Logan areas until moving to a farm southeast of Beebeetown in March of 1951. In April of 1951 their son William Joe was born. Lyle and Marie lived on the same farm until Lyle passed away in 1997. Marie then moved to her apartment in Logan. She lived there until there until she entered the nursing home in 2008.

Marie’s greatest love was cooking for her family and friends. She loved going in the kitchen, especially on warm days with all of the doors and windows open. She greatly enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and cooking special treats for them such as homemade noodles and pancakes. Everyone in the family will miss the smells of baking pies and fried chicken coming from the kitchen. Her favorite holiday was Valentine’s Day when she enjoyed making and receiving cards from the family. Marie was delighted by the birth of her five great-grandsons, Carter and Brant Mohning, Eilert and Isaac Duncan and Barrett Duncan.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents, husband Lyle, sister Edith, brothers William and Gary.

Survivors include her daughter: Connie Duncan and husband Ronald of Missouri Valley, Iowa; son: Bill Hammitt and wife Rita of Portsmouth, Iowa; sister: Elsie Killpack of Neola, Iowa; brother: Lyle Oloff of Logan, Iowa; grandchildren: Wes Hammitt and wife Corin, Wade Duncan and wife Sasha, Matthew Duncan and wife Elizabeth, and Rebecca Mohning and husband Adam.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Sunday at the Logan Memorial Chapel in Logan, Iowa.

The family would like to invite everyone to a time of lunch and fellowship at the Logan Community Center following the committal service.
