Memorial services for 81 year old Clarence L. Summers of Atlantic will be held at 11am on Friday, February 24 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Atlantic. Clarence passed away on Tuesday, February 21 at the Colonial Manor in Anita. Survivors include his wife, Norma Summers of Atlantic; Children: Vicki (Ralph) LeMay of Pella; Diane (Mike) Leslie of Shelby; and David (Shelly) Summers of Iowa City; 9 Grandchildren; and 6 Great-Grandchildren. Hockenberry Family Care in Atlantic is in charge of arrangements.

CLARENCE L. SUMMERS, 81, of Atlantic, died Tue., Feb. 21st, at the Colonial Manor in Anita. Memorial services for CLARENCE SUMMERS will be held 11-a.m. Fri., Feb. 24th, at Zion Lutheran Church in Atlantic. Hockenberry Family Care Funeral Home in Atlantic has the arrangements.

CLARENCE SUMMERS is survived by:
His wife – Norma Summers, of Atlantic;
His children – Vicki (Ralph) LeMay, of Pella; Diane (Mike) Leslie, of Shelby; & David (Shelly) Summers, of Iowa City;
9 grandchildren, & 6 great-grandchildren.

(April 7, 1930 - February 21, 2012)

Clarence Lloyd Summers, age 81, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away February 21, 2012, at Colonial Manor in Anita, Iowa.

Born April 7, 1930, in Oakland, Iowa, he was the son of Clarence H. Summers and Ida Mae Morrisson. He grew up in the Elk Horn/Exira area. He was baptized in his parent’s home by Pastor Anders Hansen of Elk Horn. Clarence was confirmed by Reverend Valdemar Jensen in 1944. He graduated from Exira High School in May of 1948. After graduation he moved to Washington D.C. to work for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) doing fingerprint analysis.

Clarence married Norma J. Holben March 25, 1951, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Logan, Iowa. February 4, 1952, he was drafted into the United States Army, serving in the Counter Intelligence Corps, stationed in Dallas, Texas. Clarence was discharged on February 3, 1954. After that, he returned to Washington to continue work for the FBI.

Clarence and Norma moved back to Logan, Iowa, in July of 1955. He enrolled in and graduated from Omaha University in May of 1958 (with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration and Accounting). After graduation, they moved to Kansas City, Missouri, where he went to work for Arthur Anderson and Company. Clarence and Norma moved next to Council Bluffs, Iowa, in 1959 where he went to work as Chief Accountant for Jennie Edmundson Hospital.

In October of 1960 they moved to Atlantic where he opened up the first branch of Home Federal Savings and Loan Association. He was promoted in January of 1970 and moved to Harlan. Clarence retired in June of 1991 as Vice President.

Clarence enjoyed volunteering for many years for the Lion’s Club, Chamber of Commerce, Boy Scouts, Indian Guides and as a Sunday School teacher. He also enjoyed camping, fishing, flying and spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Clarence and Norma enjoyed traveling to all 50 states, Canada, Mexico, Germany, Austria, Denmark and the Caribbean. The have been members of Zion Lutheran Church in Atlantic.

He is survived by his wife, Norma of Atlantic; three children, Vicki (Ralph) LeMay of Pella, Diane (Mike) Leslie of Shelby and David (Shelly) Summers of Iowa City, Iowa. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and eight step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister and two infant children.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, February 24, 2012, at Zion Lutheran Church in Atlantic, Iowa. There will be no formal visitation but family will greet friends in the church fellowship hall at a luncheon following the service.
