LEONA BUMAN, 90, of Harlan, died Mon., Feb. 21st, at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan. A Mass of Christian Burial services will be held 10:30-a.m. Friday, Feb. 25th, at St. Mary/Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Portsmouth. Burial will be in the St. Mary's Cemetery. Pauley-Jones Funeral Home in Harlan has the arrangements. Visitation at the funeral Home is from 6-9pm Thursday (2/24), with a Rosary at 6:30pm & Vigil service at 7.

Mass of Christian Burial for 90 year old Leona Buman of Harlan will be held on Friday, February 25th at 10:30am at St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima in Portsmouth with burial in the St. Mary's Cemetery in Portsmouth. She passed away on Monday, February 21st at Myrtue Medical Center. Survivors include son John (Myra) Buman II of Harlan, daughter Sandra (Harry) Gearhart of Stillwater OK, 2 brothers: Elmer (Boots) Wageman of Defiance; Edward (Judy) Wageman of Plano, TX; 1 sister: Ann Wetherby of Apple Valley, MN; special nephew Jack Wageman of Apple Valley, MN; 9 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild, and many other relatives and friends. The Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan is in charge of the arrangements where Visitation will be held from 6-9pm on Thursday with a Rosary at 6:30 and a Vigil Service at 7.

Leona Buman - Age 90

Leona Barbara Buman was born on December 11, 1920 near Defiance, Iowa, to Edward and Magdalena (Klein) Wageman. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Defiance. She attended Country School at Union No. 2 through the eighth grade before going to St. Paul’s Catholic School where she graduated. She continued her education at Mt. Saint Scholastic College in Atchison, Kansas where she received her teaching certificate.

Leona returned to the Defiance area where she taught school at Union No. 2 for three and a half years.

On June 22, 1942, she was united in marriage to Kenneth Buman at St. Peter’s Catholic Church. Two children were born to this union: John and Sandra. Leona raised the children and helped her husband on the farm near Tennant from 1942 to 2002. In 1967, she was a partner in forming Ken-Lee Distributing Company and was the office manager from 1967 to 2002.

Leona enjoyed cooking and entertaining, reading, and was a life-long music lover. She retired in 2003 and resided at Elm Crest Retirement Community. She was admitted to Myrtue Medical Center where she died on Monday, February 21, 2011, having attained the age of ninety years, two months, and ten days. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Kenneth, granddaughter Julia Anne Gearhart, sisters Kathryn Sonderman, Verdilla Bertelsen, Josephine Marshall, and Rose McCollum; and brothers Henry and George Wageman.

Leona is survived by her son John Buman II and his wife Myra of Harlan, Iowa; daughter Sandra and her husband Harry Gearhart of Stillwater, Oklahoma; nine grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sister Ann Wetherby of Apple Valley, Minnesota; brothers Elmer Wageman and his wife Boots of Defiance, Iowa and Edward Wageman and his wife Judy of Alamo, Texas; special nephew Jack Wageman of Apple Valley; other family members and friends.

Rev. John Dorton celebrated the 10:30 AM Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, February 25, 2011 at St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Portsmouth, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were Harry Gearhart, Patrick Gearhart, Michael Peaster, Randy Fields, Joe Gifford, and Jerry Buman. Interment was held at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Portsmouth.
