Life Story of John Charles McCurdy, 90

Death claimed the oldest resident of Panama in the passing of John Charles McCurdy at the home of his granddaughter, Mrs. Harry Piper Thursday afternoon March 18 at the age of 90 years.

John Charles McCurdy, son of the late Armanda (sic) and John R. McCurdy was born November 9, 1863 in a log cabin in Tama County, Iowa. On June 8, 1887 he married Annastasia Mehaulke at Marshalltown. To this union six children were born namely, John Thomas Jr., Emil, Charles, Mayme, Agnes and one dying in infancy.

They came to Panama where Mr. McCurdy served as section foreman for the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul railroad for over sixty years. Following an illness of six weeks, death was due to congestion and heart failure.

He was 90 years, 4 mo. and 3 days old at the time of his death.

Funeral services were held at St. Mary's church, Panama, Saturday morning Mar. 20 at 9 o'clock with Rt. Rev. Msgr. M. B. Schiltz officiating at the Requiem High Mass and delivering the sermon.

The pallbearers were: John Oppold, Robert Sullivan, John Kwapiszeski, Leo Pauley, Pete Arkfeld, and John Arkfeld.

Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery beside his wife who preceded him in death about five years ago.

Survivors are one son, John McCurdy Jr. of Perry, Ia. and one daughter Mrs. Mayme Zimmerman of Chicago, Ill., eight grand-children namely, Dorothy and Harry Piper, Panama, Ia., Alvina McCarthy of Washington D. C., Helen Burton and Bernice Zimmerman of Chicago, Ill, Agnes Bullock of Fairfield, Ill., Edward McCurdy of Ames, Ia. and Joseph Gruenebaum of Arizona, and twelve great grandchildren. One daughter, Mrs. Agnes Gruenbaum and two sons Emil and Charles preceded him in death.

Two brothers also survive, George of Des Moines and Tom of Moville, Ia.

Services Held For John McCurdy, 90

Funeral services were held Saturday morning at Panama for John Charles McCurdy, 90 year old retired section foreman who died Thursday at the home of his granddaughter, Mrs. Harry Piper at Panama.

A native of Tama county, Mr. McCurdy is survived by a son, John, of Perry, and a daughter, Mrs. Clara Zimmerman of Chicago.

Msgr. M. B. Schiltz officiated at the rites and Pauley's funeral home was in charge of the services. Burial was in the Panama cemetery.
