Merton I. Sachs, 89, of Bettendorf, IA, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 22, 2022 at 1:25 a.m., surrounded by his loving family at Genesis East Medical Center. Visitation will be 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday, July 25, at Weerts Funeral Home in Davenport. Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 26, at Weerts Funeral Home in Davenport. Burial will follow at the Rock Island Arsenal National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be made to the American Leukemia/Lymphoma Society, UI Health Care Cancer Services – Quad Cities or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Merton was born October 26, 1932, in Duluth, Minnesota, to Sam and Doris (Simon) Sachs and lived in Chicago prior to his work being transferred to the Quad Cities in 1973. Mr. Sachs worked for the government for 31 years and retired from the Rock Island Arsenal as a Supervisory Contract Specialist in 1990. He started his career in Chicago as procurement intern at the old Chicago Procurement District, and moved to APSA at the Joliet Arsenal before transferring to the Rock Island Arsenal in 1973. After retirement, he operated his own consulting firm, Mersac Associates, until 1997. Since that time, he has volunteered and held offices in various organizations, some of which were the Chairman of the Quad Cities Chapter of SCORE and member for 24 years. He also held vice president of Membership for (NARFE), National Active and Retired Federal Employees, served on the boards of the National Defense Industrial Association, the Rock Island Arsenal Historical Society, and a committee on the Rock Island Arsenal Credit Union. He was past president of the National Contract Management Association on the Arsenal and was elected to status as a Fellow in that organization in 1993. He married Carol Helkenn Wells in 1989 in the Little Brown Church of the Vale in Nashua, Iowa. He had some dear friends in the Chicago area that he stayed in touch with since Grammar School, who have now passed on. He enjoyed traveling, photography, and was a loyal Hawkeye fan, and followed the Cubs and Bears since his early youth. Merton was a proud Army veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife, Carol, Bettendorf; sons and daughters-in-law, Michael “Ian” and Lori Sachs, Redondo Beach, CA and Matthew and Yvette Sachs, Columbia, TN; two step sons: Kent and Paul Wells, of Davenport; former wife, Ann (Keenan) Sachs of Tucson, AZ; and many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister & brother-in-law, Jeanne and Earl Sachnoff.
