America "Amy" Leszczynski

November 7, 1933-November 20, 2021

On Saturday evening, November 20, America "Amy" Leszczynski, age 88, went to be with the Lord. Born in Linares, Chile on November 7, 1933, she was the older of two daughters born to Zorobabel & Magdalena Norambuena, who preceded her in death. Amy was an incredibly determined and intelligent woman. She was in the first class of women to graduate from the Caribineros de Chile (the national police academy) in 1962. Passionate about education, she studied French in college in Chile, and continued her education after emigrating to the U.S. at Marycrest College, Black Hawk College and Indiana University Northwest.

Amy taught at an elementary school in the Quad Cities area and adored working with her students who called her "Miss America."

Amy is survived by her loving husband William Leszczynski. Married at Saint Anne Church in East Moline, IL on March 18, 1972, they resided in Merrillville, IN and had the fortune to celebrate 49 anniversaries together. Amy is survived by her two children, James (Laura) Casey of Hobart, and Kathleen (Andrew) Groves of Lafayette. Also surviving is her beloved sister, Amanda (Edmundo) Allen of Viņa del Mar, Chile; numerous nieces and nephews; two grandchildren, Anthony (Mindy) Brown-Silva, and James (Cristal) Pruitt; and a great granddaughter, Lucaya.

Amy took great comfort in her Christian faith and was happiest when she was helping others. She enjoyed classical music, reading, travel, knitting and socializing. An important milestone in her life was becoming a naturalized citizen. To underscore her determination and lifelong passion for learning, she eagerly learned how to use a computer and cell phone in her senior years.

Due to Covid, a memorial service will be scheduled for a later date. The family would appreciate memories & photos to be shared on her Facebook page: facebook.com/americaleszczynski
