Alvin L. Baxter, 89, of Port Byron, IL, passed away on Monday, November 15, 2021 at his home. Services will be held at 10:00 am Saturday, November 20, 2021 at the Countryside Christian Church, Port Byron. Visitation will be Friday from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the Gibson-Bode Funeral Home, Port Byron. Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Gardens in East Moline. Memorials may be made to Countryside Christian Church, or Unity Point Hospice.
Alvin was born on March 8. 1932 in Hollis, OK. to Stephen and LeeAnnie (Cornutt) Baxter. He was a veteran, serving in the Korean War with the U.S. Air Force from 1951 to 1955.
On September 1, 1956 Alvin married Shirley Breeden in Rapids City, IL. He worked for over 30 years as a pipe fitter for John Deere, retiring in 1987. He was a member of Countryside Christian Church for 63 years, serving as an elder for several years. He was active in church planting and served as interim preacher in many churches. In the 1980’s he served with China Bible Mission carrying Bibles to home churches in China.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Shirley; children, Judith (Keith) Luck, Bolingbrook, IL, Larry (Mary Ann) Baxter of Lombard, IL, Steve Baxter,
Rockford, IL, and Timothy Baxter, Silvis, IL; grandchildren, Heather Ackerman, Jesse Baxter, Paul Mikles, Cody Mikles, Nathan Baxter, Lucas Baxter, and Danika Baxter; great-grandchildren, Dylan and Harrison Ackerman, and Pearl and Paul (Roy) Mikles, and a sister-in-law Jeannie Baxter.
Alvin was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Ona Baxter, Ruby Powers, Lorene Thompson, Vida Hall, Lena Holt, Herb Baxter, Johnnie Baxter, David Baxter, Walter Baxter, and Sam Baxter.
The family wants to extend their heartfelt thanks to Unity Point Hospice for their compassionate care and support shown to the entire family.
