William “Bill” Elbert Dwine, 94, passed away Saturday, October 9, 2021, at Overlook Village Senior Living, Moline. Cremation rites have been accorded and private inurnment will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the National Hospice Partnership Foundation.

Bill was born November 21, 1926, in Dow City, Iowa, the son of Jay and Lois (Goddard) Dwine.

He graduated from Dow City High School and served in the Army Air Force during World War II. Following the war, he attended and graduated from Iowa State College with a degree in what was then called industrial engineering. Today that discipline is called business administration. He served in The United States Air Force during the Korean conflict.

Bill was involved in buying livestock from the age of 14. He worked with his father and had his own livestock company before working for Hygrade Foods, Oscar Mayer, and Dubuque Packing Company.

He married Ethel Vaughan in 1951 in Douglas, Arizona. The couple moved to LeClaire, Iowa in 1974. She preceded him in death in 1990.

After retirement, he enjoyed traveling and socializing with his many friends. He wintered in Arizona where he was most often found sitting on the veranda smoking a “little cigar.” Bill enjoyed playing bridge, doing crosswords, listening to big band music, dancing, reading, and cooking. He will be remembered for his quick wit, calm demeanor, and high integrity.

Survivors include his three children Steve Dwine, Bemidji, MN, Diana Mayberry, Eldridge, IA, Will Dwine, Rockford, IL; his grandchild, Shawna Cassidy, Rock Island, IL; and great-grandchild, Payton Cassidy, Rock Island, IL.

Bill often reminded those of us who spent any amount of time with him, “this too shall pass, the good and the bad.” As it turns out, he was right.
