October 12, 1926 ~ January 29, 2012 (age 85)

Funeral services for Kermit M. Clingman, 85, a resident of Bettendorf, will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, February 4, 2012 at St. John's United Methodist Church, 14th and Brady Streets, Davenport. Burial will take place in Davenport Memorial Park with military honors. Visitation will be Friday from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home. Mr. Clingman died Sunday, January 29, 2012 at Genesis Medical Center, East Rusholme Street, Davenport.

Kermit Moreland Clingman was born on October 12, 1926 in Davenport, a son of Harvey L. and Bernice (Moreland) Clingman. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. His duties included shore patrol and radioman on a torpedo bomber. Kermit was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Virginia "Ginny" Copeland on October 2, 1948. They have shared over 63 years of marriage and memories together.

Kermit graduated from Augustana College with a degree in Economics after being discharged. He then went to work for Brammer Manufacturing for twelve years. Mr. Clingman later received his teaching certificate from Augustana and received his Masters degree from Northeast Missouri State University. He taught at J.B. Young Intermediate for 26 years, primarily teaching science. He retired in 1988.

Kermit was a member of St. John&s United Methodist Church, Davenport, Phi Delta Kappa, serving as Local President, and American Legion Post 26. Kermit was an active blood donor, and volunteered many hours with the mobile donor banks.

Kermit enjoyed golfing in adult senior leagues, adult swimming at Bettendorf High School, and the Silver Sneakers Program at the Bettendorf YMCA.

Memorials may be made to St. John&s United Methodist Church.

Kermit is survived by his wife, Ginny, Bettendorf; children and their spouses: Mark and Emily Clingman, Davenport and Joanne and Paul Swesey, Panora, IA; step-grandchildren, Anthony and Jacquelyn McKittrick; a sister, Doreen (Bill) Beenck, Denver, Colorado; a brother-in-law, Jim (Marilyn) Copeland; and many loving nieces and nephews.
