Laurence “Larry” Fisher, 69, of Le Claire, Iowa; passed away Saturday, May 23, 2020 at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf, Iowa. Private family services will be held on Saturday, May 30, 2020. A visitation where friends can drive up to pay their respects to Larry’s family will be held on Saturday, May 30, 2020 from 1-3pm at Weerts Funeral Home. Memorials in Larry’s name may be made to the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital.
Larry was born in Davenport, Iowa on January 31, 1951 to Orton and Mildred Fisher. He attended Davenport Central High School, where his interest in photography began as a member of the student newspaper and yearbook staff. He received his Bachelors Degree from the Kansas City Art Institute. Larry was united in marriage to the love of his life, Janet Hughes, on November 14, 1981 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Davenport, Iowa. He was a photojournalist for the Quad City Times for 39 years before retiring in 2014. Larry received many awards for his photography. One of his most famous photos was of Augustana students reacting to the verdict of the OJ Simpson trial in 1995, which earned Larry a Pulitzer nomination. He enjoyed figure skating, bass fishing, reading, and being outside. Larry was a huge animal lover. He had a great sense of humor, known as the “Fisher wit”; he was very kind and generous. He was also a member of the St. Anthony Catholic Church.
Larry is survived by his wife, Jan and two children Jon and Jessy. His corgi, Sasha, will continue to guard his patio and keep an eye on the Mississippi for him. He was preceded in death by his parents.
