Obituary of H.J. Markley
Herbert J. (H.J.) Markley of Bettendorf, IA passed away on May 22, 2019 in hospice care surrounded by his loving family.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, May 29, at 4:00-7:00PM, at Runge Funeral Home and Mortuary, Kimberly Rd, Davenport. Funeral services will be held at Runge Funeral Home and Mortuary, Thursday, May 30, at 10:00AM. Private burial will take place at a later time.

H.J. was born on April 15, 1950, son of Herbert and Nancy Markley. He was a graduate of Phillips Academy - Andover, received a BA in Economics from the College of Wooster, OH, and earned his MBA at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College, NH.

He married Laura Denice Easter in 1974 in Buffalo, NY and relocated to the Quad City area where he began a 35 year career with Deere and Company. Survivors include his wife of 44 years, his son Evan (Samyukta), daughter Laura (Vincent Davidson), grandchildren Noelle and Elise Davidson, Sahil and Arjun Markley, and sisters Sheila (Pat Black), Maura (Michael Pollak), and Noreen (Maynard Timm).

He joined Deere and Company as a factory auditor and moved up in positions of increasing responsibility in manufacturing operations. He was named general manager of the John Deere Dubuque Works in 1988 and general manager of the John Deere Waterloo Works in 1992. He was named an officer of the company in 1996 and went on to hold various senior officer positions from 2000 until his retirement in 2009. He later served on the board of Goldman Sachs Asset Management from 2013 to 2019.
