The Davenport Weekly Leader; Friday, January 11, 1901; p. 2, col. 6:

At the home of his daughter, Mrs. Anna Copley, four miles north of the city, on Tuesday night, occurred the death of William Riggs, one of the well known early settlers of Scott county and a man of sterling character, charitable in all his actions, and one who had the love and esteem of everyone by whom he was known. The cause of death was old age as he was 85 years old, and the end came peacefully and without pain, he bidding the members of the household good-night on Tuesday evening, appearing at the time to be in his usual health. Not arising at his accustomed hour the next morning, his daughter went to his room to see what was the matter and was greatly shocked to find him cold in death, he having passed away during the night as above stated.

The deceased was born in Lancastershire, England, he coming to this country in 1843 [? - last 2 digits difficult to read] landing at New Orleans. The following year he came to Davenport and took up his abode on 160 acres of land in Davenport township, where he continued to reside until 1873, when he removed to this city.

On July 24, 1845, Mr. Riggs and Miss Mary Brownlie were united in marriage, his wife preceding him to the grave by many years. He was at one time a member of the Board of Supervisors and also took an active part in the affairs of his township. The deceased is survived by six children as follows:
William B. of Marshalltown, Mrs. Chas. Murray of Scott county, George of San Francisco, Mrs. F. B. Campbell of Fort Scott, Kas., Mrs. Anna Copley, at whose home he died, and Edward L. of San Francisco.

The funeral will be held Saturday morning at 10 o’clock from his daughter’s Mrs. Copley’s residence. Interment at Pinehill cemetery.
