At 9:30 o'clock Friday evening at the residence 1831 West Third street occurred the death of Mathias Riehle, one of Davenport's best known citizens and for many years quite prominent in business circles. Deceased was 76 years, 10 months and 28 days old. He was born in Berghaupton, Baden, but came to this country when a young man, and has resided in this state for the past 42 years, having come to Davenport in 1857. The cause of his death was old age and valvular heart trouble.

He immediately started a restaurant on West Second street near where Muhs Bros. store is now located. Later he removed to the present location of George W. Kerker's store and again occupied the present location of Silberstein Bros. store. He closed out the restaurant in 1865 and went into the wood business at which he was engaged for two years, and in 1867 he built the St. Charles hotel at the northwest corner of Third and Harrison streets which he conducted for twenty years, when he retired from active business.

Deceased is survived by his wife Caroline Riehle and four children, Mrs. P.H. Schlapp, Mrs. Louis Offerman, and Miss Theresa at home, and Louis Riehle.

The funeral will be held Monday morning with services at St. Mary's church at 9 o'clock. Interment at St. Mary's cemetery.
