Veteran of the Civil War Passes Away

John C. Hesser, 76, Succumbs at His Home in Muscatine.

Muscatine, IA., Feb G.--John C. Hesser, 76, a veteran of the Civil war, died at home at 1619 Orange street this morning at 6:30 o'clock. Death followed a lingering illness. Mr. Hesser having suffered a stroke a year ago last June. He had been confined to his bed for some time.

Mr. Hesser was born in Johnson county, Iowa. Oct. 20, 1847. His early life was spent in Drury township, Illinois, where he farmed for a number of years. At the beginning of the Civil war he enlisted in the Seventh Iowa Volunteer infantry. Company A, and served throughout the rebellion. On Nov. 21, 1867 he was united in marriage to Miss Eliza Reynolds. Eleven children were born to this union, two of whom died in infancy. Surviving are his wife and eight children. They are Abe of Boone, Colo.; Mrs. Henry Hampton of New Boston, Ill.; John of Gainesville, Fla.; Mrs. Lawrence Beeney of Foster, Ill.; Mrs. John Mills of Arden, Iowa; Mrs. J.S. Milton and Harry Hesser of Muscatine, and a sister Mrs. Mathilda Bell of Buffalo, Iowa.

Funeral announcement will be made later.
