Packed Church for L.J. Dougherty Funeral Service

Davenport - Sacred Heart cathedral was filled to capacity this morning for funeral services for Lee J. Dougherty, chairman of the advisory council of the Occidental Life Insurance Co. of California, who died of a cerebral hemorrhage in Chicago Tuesday. Pontifical requiem mass was celebrated by the Most Rev. Ralph L. Hayes, bishop of Davenport, with the Most Rev. Henry P. Rholman, archbishop of Dubuque and the Most Rev. Gerald T. Bergen, bishop of Des Moines, in attendance. Tribute to the work of Mr. Dougherty as a Catholic layman and as a Davenport civic leader was paid by the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Martin Cone, pastor of the cathedral, in the funeral sermon. Interment followed at Mount Cavalry cemetery.
Officials of the mass, in addition to Bishop Hayes as celebrant, were the Rt. Rev. Msgr. William L. Hannon of Muscatine, assistant priest; the Revs. Enos Barnes, St. Mary's, Moline, and F.W. Barron, St. Anthony's, Davenport, deacons of honor; the Rev. L.A. Kerrigan, St. Mary's, and the Rev. A.J. Barry, Sacred Heart cathedral, deacon and sub deacon of the mass; the Revs. L.C. Sterk, St. Ambrose college, and Edward Greer, Sacred Heart cathedral, masters of ceremonies.
Ushers at the cathedral were J.M. Hutchinson, John Krez, Chicago; Henry Priester, John J. Quail, Ed Ruhl, Edgar Stafford, Ed Walsh and Walter Walsh. Active pallbearers were Eugene J. Halligan, Dr. Gordon F. Harkness, William A. Hickey, Walter F. Meiburg, Paul McCarthy, Cable G. Von Maur, Thomas J. Walsh and Henry C. Wurzer.
