The Davenport (IA) Daily Leader; Tuesday, April 3, 1894:

Buffalo, Ia., March 31 - Sunday morning occurred the death of the well-known and respected brewer, John Brandbecker [transcriber's note - should be Bartberger]. The cause of death was gangrene caused by a corn on his toe. The deceased was born over 74 years ago in Baden and came to the United States in 1851. For the last few years he had retired from business. He leaves a wife and daughter, Mrs. Theodore Kautz, to mourn his loss. Hosts of friends and acquaintances join with the family in deploring the death of the esteemed husband and father. The funeral takes place April 3 at ten o’clock. Interment at the city cemetery.
