Late Saturday afternoon at his home, 1121 West Sixth street, occurred the death of one of this city's oldest residents. Johann Anton Schebler. The deceased was well-known in the community, and was a veteran of the Civil war. He was born in Bavaria, Germany, in 1824. He became a baker by trade and had his first experience as a soldier during the German was of 1848. In 1852 Mr. Schebler came to America and to Scott county. His first enlistment in the services of this country was with Strasser's band in 1861. Mr. Schebler was a musician and a member of Davenport's first musical organization. He served with the band for a year, when he was given an honorable discharge and almost immediately re-enlisted, this time with the Twenty-eighth Iowa infantry. He served with that regiment until the close of the war. Rheumatism was contracted while undergoing army life, and Mr. Schebler's health has since been very poor.

The deceased leaves a wife and four children, two sons, John and George, and two daughters, Mrs. Mathilda Gasser and Sister Waldpurga, at the Rock Island Hospital. Three brothers, Casper, Frank, and Richard, live in this city.

The funeral will be held Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock from St. Joseph's church, the interment being in Holy Family cemetery.
