Tuesday, June 14, 1898; p. 2Coleman - The death of Captain James Coleman, an old Davenporter and one of the best known Mississippi river pilots, occurred at Independence, Ia., and the remains arrived in this city yesterday morning.
The captain had been in feeble health for several years and his death was not entirely unexpected.
He was born in Ohio 72 years ago, but had been a resident of Davenport since 1837 , being one of the old time rivermen in this section and commanding some of the largest crafts on the upper river.
He was married early in life and his wife died in this city in 1856. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. W. J. Francis of Sanborn, Iowa, and two brothers, J. H. S. Coleman of this city, and Egbert of Colorado.
Captain Coleman was a member of Davenport lodge No. 37 A. F. and A. M.
The funeral will be held from the Fourteenth street M. E. church at 2 o’clock with services by Rev. W. S. Crafts. The services at the grave will be conducted by the Masons.
