DAVENPORT-Funeral service and Mass of Christian Burial for Paul J. Walz, 87, a resident of Davenport, will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church. Burial will be in National Cemetery, Rock Island Arsenal. Visitation will be 2-5 p.m. Sunday at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, where a prayer service will be offered at 3:30 p.m.
Mr. Walz died Thursday, April 10, 2003, at Genesis Medical Center-East Campus, from complications of Diabetes.
Paul John Walz was born Sept. 5, 1915, in Davenport, a son of Edmund and Jennie (Otten) Walz. He married Rita Pohlmann on July 31, 1948, in Davenport.
He attended St. Ambrose Academy, Davenport. Paul served his country during World War II in Europe with the U.S. Army, 355th Infantry Regiment-89th Division and the 783rd Ordinance Company-83rd Division.
Paul's career was in auto service. He was employed through the years at Schwind-Boeker Buick, Ray and Paul's Garage, Handler Motors, Midas Transmission and Al's Transmission Service, from whence he retired as manager in 1980.
In addition to the church, he was a member of Knights of Columbus, 532, Davenport.
He was an avid dancer and bowler, and he enjoyed hunting, fishing and woodworking.
Memorials can be made to St. Alphonsus Church.
Survivors include his wife, Rita; a son, Bill Walz, Davenport; a daughter, Betsy Smith, Indianola, Iowa; two granddaughters, Moriah and Maggie Smith; and a sister, Mary Weeg, Davenport.
Brothers, Ed, George, Eugene and William Walz, preceded him in death. May they rest in peace.
