The Davenport Gazette; Thursday Morning, September 23, 1847:

[An obituary in a ‘round ‘bout way]

Hunter

Waubsinonock, Sept. 17, 1847

Mr. Sanders [Editor of the Gazette]: -- Sir, as a stranger I write you to inform you of the death of Samuel Hunter. He died on the 9th, inst., after a short illness.

Having lived with my uncle since the spring of 1844 enjoying the pleasure of reading your paper, I should feel myself deprived of a great favorite in losing it. If you think proper, you may send the Gazette, to the name of James L. Hunter at two dollars per year and I shall always try to pay you within the first six months.

Yours &c.
James L. Hunter

[Editor writes:] We had no personal acquaintance with Mr. Hunter dec’d but understood him to have been an active member of the Church of Disciples on the Waubsinonock. We know him well as an old subscriber who paid for his paper. -- Ed. Gaz.
