Elbert

Elbert, J. A., aged 80 years, died yesterday morning at 6:45 o’clock, at his home at 315½ Myrtle street. Funeral will be held Thursday morning at 10 o’clock with interment at City cemetery.

Mr. Elbert was born in Bavaria, Germany on Nov. 4, 1824, and came to America in 1846. On August 8 of that year he arrived in Baltimore. Later he removed to Louisville and Baton Rouge, and later went to Black Mint, La. After residing at Yesso City and Vicksburg, Miss., he came to Davenport on July 5, 1886, and has resided here ever since.

He was married to Miss Margaret Neufeldt who died in 1859 and later he married Miss Elizabeth Stacey, who died on March 8, 1897. Two children by his first wife, Mrs. Eva Nicholls and Fred Elbert survive, besides three children by his second wife, R. S. Elbert, Mrs. Emma Couplin and Mrs. Ida Bawden.

Mr. Elbert was a man whose mind never deserted him and at the age of 80 years he wrote a book which he called “Life and Freedom.”
