Abt
Another old settler passed away this morning. Adam Abt who has resided at 1006 Harrison street for many years. Adam Abt was born in Bavaria, Germany, in the year 1804. Half a century ago he came to America, coming to Scott county in 1847, where he has lived ever since. He became engaged in the shoe business in which he continued until about eighteen years ago when he retired from active life.
His health was remarkably good for a man of his advanced years. In fact he was able to go around without any assistance. His eyesight remained sound so that he was able with the assistance of spectacles to read the newspapers without any trouble. He suffered from no malady whatever until last Friday, when he became seriously ill from the effects of a slight cold, which he had caught a few days before. A physician was called in Saturday morning, who pronounced him to be laboring under an attack of pneumonia. He lingered until 1:20 o’clock this morning, when he passed away.
Mr. Abt kept a shop on Front street between Brady and Main streets from about the close of the war until 1873, the same year that occurred the death of his wife. Since then he has remained at home, provided for by his son, Adam, who remained with him to the last.
The funeral will take place Thursday morning with services at St. Joseph’s church at 9 o’clock. Interment will be in St. Mary’s cemetery.
