Thomas Kelly was killed and John Kelly severely injured at Davenport on Saturday last. The Journal says:

“On Saturday morning between eight and nine o’clock, two men, Thomas Kelly and John Kelly were standing near the steam shovel that had been operating close to a side of a twenty foot perpendicular cut. A man who was standing above the grade saw a crackling of dirt toppling over and ready to fall. He cried out for those below to run for their lives. John Kelly heard him, saw the danger in an n instant, and leaped as far as he could beyond and below. Thomas Kelly was not quick enough, however, or more probably did not see the impending danger soon enough, as he was buried beneath twenty tons weight of dirt. John Kelly did not jump quite far enough to clear the descending mass, and the edge of it caught him and injured him severely. He was soon extricated from the dirt when it was found that he sustained the following injuries – face gashed above chin and lips, and over the eye, three teeth knocked out, leg lacerated, and otherwise badly bruised.”
