Mary Ann (O’Tool) Thies, age 83, of Arthur, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, January 18, 2023, at the UnityPoint Health-Iowa Lutheran Hospital of Des Moines, Iowa.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Tuesday, January 24, 2023, at the St. Martin Catholic Church of Odebolt, Iowa. Father Joseph Dillinger will officiate. Committal Services will follow in the St. Martin Catholic Cemetery of Odebolt, Iowa.

A Visitation will be held one-hour prior to the Mass from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., with a Rosary at 9:15 a.m., on Tuesday, January 24, 2023, at the St. Martin Catholic Church of Odebolt, Iowa.

Mary Ann (O’Tool) Thies was born on October 6, 1939, at the Loring Hospital in Sac City, Iowa, to June (Pfeiffer) and Clair O’Tool. She grew up in the Sac City area and graduated from Sac City High School with the class of 1958. In her youth, she was actively involved in 4-H and enjoyed showing cattle at the fair.

Mary Ann married George Roeder and they were blessed with two sons, Dean and Paul. After 17 years, the couple separated. On March 28, 1980, Mary Ann married Loren Thies at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. The couple made their home on the farm in rural Arthur, Iowa.

In her early years, Mary Ann worked as a CNA at the nursing home in Sac City. In 1979 she began working at the Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, Iowa. She started as a CNA then transferred to the Housekeeping Department and ended her career working in the Supply Room. She retired on December 31, 2014, after 35 years of employment with Horn Memorial Hospital.

Mary Ann loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well as attending family events. She could be found outside tending to her flowers or sitting and watching her birds. She enjoyed baking and cooking, playing cards, going on trips, watching and supporting race car drivers, and having coffee with friends.

Left to cherish her memory include her sons Dean (Dawn) Roeder of Arthur, IA and Paul (Sue) Roeder of Odebolt, IA; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brothers Pat (Alice) O’Tool of Nora Springs, IA, Randy (Lisa) O’Tool of Mason City, IA and Donald (Angela) O’Tool of Clear Lake, IA; sisters Shirley Sosalla of Cedar Rapids, IA and Linda Olson of Mason City, IA; sisters-in-law Marilyn Dreesen of Peoria, IL, Thilieu Dreesen of Peoria, IL and Rebecca Gilles of Burnsville, MN; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Ronald (Zanet) Thies, Richard (Sherry) Thies, Rudy (Deanna) Thies, Joann Lund, Diane (Gary) Boerner, Linnea (Bill) Hopp, Mary (Bob) Jochims, and Lois (Don) Dunkin; several nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Loren Thies; parents Clair O’Tool and June (Pfeiffer) O’Tool; stepmother Catherine O’Tool; brothers Robert Dreesen, Jerry Dreesen and Ronald Dreesen; stepson Randy Thies; and grandson Cody Hammond.
