Mattie Mae Penney Sissel
Mattie Mae Penney Sissel was born October 14, 1885, in Nemaha, Nebraska, to Edwin and Phoebe Lindsey Sissel, and gained her wings, March 8, 1971, at the Clearview Nursing Home in Mount Ayr, IA.
Services were conducted March 12, 1971, at the Kellerton United Methodist Church by Rev. Sheridan Mallott.
Mattie grew up in Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Nebraska. During her lifetime she traveled by covered wagon and lived in a sod house. She watched the Indians go by their residence every day for many months. Later she learned they lived on what was the Trail of Tears. She relayed many memories of growing up in pioneer times to her immediate family and grandchildren.
Mattie married California Sissel on December 23, 1903, in Auburn, NE. To this union three children were born: Elizabeth Mae, James Ralph and Ernest Glen. They made their home on a farm south of Kellerton. She was a very good cook, and never hesitated to cook for thrashers or for people who helped on the farm. She also liked to crochet and sew. She was a good neighbor and friend to many.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Cal, her parents, her sister, Carrie, and her brothers: Ralph and Walter Penney.
She is survived by her three children: Mae Watson and husband, Bo, of Fort Des Moines, IA; Ralph and wife, Edith, of Torrington, WY, and Glen and wife Evelyn, of Kellerton; 8 grandchildren, Carolyn Watson of Fort Des Moines, Cathryn Potter of West Lafayette, IN, Jim Watson of Des Moines, John Watson and wife, Judy of Indianola, Betty Joyce and husband Dee James and Evelyn Mae and husband, Don Jepson, of Douglas, WY, Suzanne and husband Wayne Brown of Pleasant Hill, IA, and Jane Ellen and husband, David Smith, of Maryville, MO
Interment is in Maple Row Cemetery at Kellerton.
