Hanks, Bertha Lorraine Jarred

Bertha Lorraine Hanks, youngest daughter of Arthur and Etta (Dyer) Jarred, was born April 18, 1913 near Waterson, Iowa in Ringgold County. She died at the Ringgold County Hospital on July 8, 1995, at the age of 82 years, two months and 20 days.

She grew up and received her education in Ringgold County. On October 1, 1930, she was married to Floyd Jefferson Hanks. Two daughters were born to this union. Bertha and Floyd spent most of their life together in Kellerton, Iowa.

Bertha ran a cafe in Kellerton from 1950 to 1966. She called it Bert's Cafe and she was never happier than during the time when she was serving her hardy home cooked meals with her delicious homemade pies. She didn't serve customers, she served friends.

Bertha spent the last three years of her life in Clearview Nursing Home, where was cared for by a caring and loving staff.

She was preceded in death by her husband Floyd, her daughter Marsha, her parents, two brothers and a sister.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughters and sons-in-law JoAnn and Wayne George of Kellerton and Fern Louise and Calvin Gregg of Mount Ayr; 14 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren and 11 great great grandchildren; a sister, Marjorie Beymer of Richmond, Indiana, and sisters-in-law, Faresta Minnick of Kellerton, Dale Jarred of Mount Ayr and Regina Jarred of Sydney, NE, and several nieces and nephews. She will be missed by all her family and friends.

Services were held at Wilson-Watson Funeral Home in Mount Ayr, Iowa July 12, 1995. Officiating was Rev. Doris Kinton. Music was provided by Mrs. Malcolm Eighmy, Mrs. Jim Jones and Mrs. Robert Fisher. Casket bearers included Michael George, Dan Springer, Ronnie George, Jerry Gregg, Kirk Greenman, and Ronnie Gregg.

Interment was at the Maple Row Cemetery in Kellerton, Iowa.
